”Was it worth it?” by pop duo Pet Shop Boys was released in december 1991, and especially one figure in the video caught my attention.
The video apparently mixes footage from a Pet Shop Boys concert and a crowd of partygoers dancing in a nightclub. Together with the music – wich almost sounds like a dance club anthem - everything looks really vibrant and a great big of a laugh with the bunch of wild dressed people dancing together.
I guess I have always been fascinated by tall and long legged women. But I literally dropped my jaw, when this extremely tall blonde and statuesque beauty suddenly appeared in the video.
She was wearing a small black and white polka dot dress, and she towered over everyone in the crowd. You only saw her for a few seconds, but there was something special about her. Something admirably smart, sophisticated and classy. Early on the video you see her strike a pose together with a sexy, muscular black guy and a lady, who is wearing a white shirt with a black tie. In the middle and in the end she dances with the black guy. She towers over him and is almost two heads taller.
I recorded the video and watched the tape over and over again and also put in on still. The happy partygoers put a smile on my face, but I was especially captivated by the woman with the polka dots. She was only there for a few seconds, but with her aristocratic beauty and fascinating aura this mysterious woman stood out from the crowd and somehow managed to hijack my brain for a while.
So many years later I did some research. The director of the video, Eric Watson, who directed at least 12 Pet Shop Boys videos, mentions someplace, that the dancing crowd were partygoers from Kinky Gerlinky, an infamous and progressive London clubnight society.
Some people call it the most fabulous and most stylish nightclub London ever had.
It is mentioned on the internet, that the Kinky Gerlinky nights were compered by Winston and Stella Stein. And amongst the regulars of club were Boy George and Leigh Bowery. Other names mentioned among the regular pack are DJ Jon of the Pleased Wimmin, Transformer, Maur Valance, MC Kinky and Sheila Tequila.
I just found out, that Dick Jewell, Kinky Gerlinkys resident photographer, produced a DVD/film in 2002, that celebrates the infamous club nights. I guess I’ll have to order that.
Being only 14 and living in a different country, I didn’t know anything about this phenomenon. But I find it very interesting to check it all out so many years later. The club apparently attracted revellers of all sexualities as well as genders and races, and it seems like they had a blast.
I’d still like to know more about that very tall mysterious dancer in the video. I haven’t found other traces or stories about her. Just a small note of info would be nice.
By the way: I suspect, that this video experience back then has affected me in a funny way.
I turn my head, every time I see a woman wearing a black and white polka dot dress. If you wear that, you receive top grades and lots of respect in my book. Those dresses are so hot!
I remember this video. I'm not sure, that the crowd is Kinky Gerlinky people. The video was inspired by that, but the people in it could just have been models and actors.
